The Messy Middle - Where Most People Leave

Thinking about starting a business is really exciting.

As you take your first steps into the online space, you're filled with passion, enthusiasm, optimism, and hope for what may become.

You navigate those early months, your core focus is to show up, get content out, build your website, create your first products/services, and find your feet, as you begin the journey of being an entrepreneur.

It’s dazzling, and empowering. You are an entrepreneur!

But somewhere down the line, when you’ve been showing up for a while.

You hit the messy middle.

That’s a place where many entrepreneurs give up and walk away.

The reason they do this, is that the messy middle takes you out of the early days of passion and enthusiasm, and into a vortex of challenge that’s rarely a short walk, and tends to be a serious mountain you have to climb.

The messy middle is where you’ve established all of the initial foundations for your business, you’ve found your feet, you’ve got your business model sorted, and now you’re showing up, waiting for, but not getting, the results you want and need.

The messy middle is the danger point, where we can often get pulled into all of the noise on social media, where we’re told that the reason we’re not seeing results is because:-

• we’re not following trends

• we’re not chasing the gimmicks

• we’re not posting enough

• we’re not doing enough cold outreach in DMs

• we’re not using reels

• and more, and more..

Before we know it, in an attempt to get results more quickly, we’ve been sucked in to the noise telling us to do all of these things, and then we get pigeon holed by it.

Slowly but surely we lose our uniqueness, we start to blend in with the same old same old that everyone else is doing, and they’re doing it, because they’re in the messy middle too, and are being persuaded by the noise as well.

If we don’t get sucked in to the all the noise, if we stand firm, and we keep our own unique approach, the messy middle can still feel so uncomfortable, so challenging, so unrewarding, that it is often the point we choose, instead, to walk away.

Every single business has to traverse the messy middle.

There is no start-up, and jump straight to success, journey.

But no-one tells us how much we have to be prepared for the silence and personal fight that comes inside the messy middle.

• The content that gets no engagement

• The products that don’t sell

• The launches that flop

• Even the freebies that seemingly no-one wants.

The messy middle is the toughest part of growing your business you’ll experience.

Start up is easy when you’re full of enthusiasm and a veritable online virgin.

Success comes with its own challenges, but at least you receive financial reward in return.

The messy middle is the alone time. The fighting for results time. The digging deep with discipline to keep going time.

It’s so uncomfortable, and so persistent, sometimes for years and years.

We don’t expect this. Because no-one really tells us to prepare for it.

And so, when the messy middle arrives, it can feel like a huge weight, and one we’re dragging along every single day as we fight to figure out how to make it through to the other end.

But if we can just keep pushing forwards through the messy middle. Keep taking the steps. Learning, testing, staying unique to ourselves as we go.

The light at the end of the messy middle slowly, but surely comes in to greater view, and at some point we get to step out of the messy middle, and in to the light, where our real success starts to show.
