cutting through the noise to find what works best for you

Cutting Through The Noise

July 01, 20256 min read

I have been guilty of falling in to the trap of following all of the noise in the online space.

And it has never worked for my business.

When I coach female small business owners, I see them joining all the noise, and seeing their businesses get stuck in the process.

The noise does not = your success.

In fact the noise can = your failure.

When I talk about the noise, I mean this pressure we feel to be:

  • visible everywhere

  • following all the trends

  • jumping on to the gimmicks

  • copycatting those who are ahead of us

  • joining the hustle culture

  • thinking we have to do what everyone else is doing, in order to reach success

Just this morning I had a 121 session with a creative business owner who rather under confidently told me about an idea she had for her business, that she was clearly very uncertain about.

The moment she mentioned that idea, I knew she’d thought of something that had the potential to be BIG.

However, because she had not seen other businesses doing this thing, she questioned following through with the idea.

She mentioned that other people in her niche were doing well, had growth and success, and they were churning out the same old stuff everyone else was doing, without any new or unique angle.

This is why she felt her idea would not have legs.

When I questioned her a little more about this, it turned out those business owners who were seeing success with the ‘same old’ things everyone was doing, had been in business ten years or more, and had been able to capture their audiences at a time when what is the ‘same old’ today, was ‘new’ back then. Right place, right time, to capture their market share.

These days, however, sitting in a sea of the same old noise makes it much, much harder to grow.

My client, I, and you, have to instead find our own unique ways and angles to STAND OUT from noise, be bold about being different, and be confident in bringing a new angle online.

Of course that new angle can’t be any old crazy just for the sake of it. The angle has to be something that will be attractive enough to our ICP (Ideal Customer Profile).

My client had a new angle that is far from over-saturated online, and an angle that could really ignite her audience’s attention, and propel her business forwards.

With the confidence to bring that new angle to the online space, and to share her messaging, content, products, services, lead magnets around that angle, she might just have hit on the thing that will help her stand out from the noise.

This should be your goal too.

Your unique ‘angle’ doesn’t have to re-invent the wheel, or be something extraordinary.

Often the unique angles can be smaller, quieter, less overwhelming things that still have impact, because they are someway, somehow, different for your audience, and as a result, they help you stand out.

One of the unique angles for my brand as a business coach, is I shun all of the trends, the gimmicks, the ways we are told to ‘go viral’. I want none of that noise in my business, and I’m vocal about saying so.

In having this angle, I attract many other female business owners to me, who also want a different approach, who don’t want to invest time in the mass noise of growth marketing we see saturated all over social.

This is just one different angle I take. But it draws an audience to me.

Whether it’s the way you approach your marketing, the type of content you produce, your unique messaging, branding, products, services, where you show up, how you show up, with a certainty I can say that if you choose to copycat all of the noise, you will find it difficult and overwhelming to scale.

When you step away from the masses. You take time to find your unique approach, and you move into the power of that. You’re likely to see your success take off.

Consider when you look to a field full of white woolly sheep. Your eyes will always be drawn to the one black sheep standing in the middle of the pack.

Your business, you, need to focus on becoming the black sheep. It will serve you well when you do.

Also consider that there’s no one way to grow a successful business. No matter what anyone says.

There are many, many different ways to grow and scale your business. Finding the way that aligns best with you and your audience is the thing that matters.

For me, that means zero short form video content on social media. More visibility in spaces where I can write and present deeper, longer messages.

For me, that means community sits at the heart of the products/services I create, with those communities having access to ‘standalone’ tips, trainings and resources within the community.

For me, that means bringing a message around not having to chase trends or go viral to achieve success. I make sure success looks different here.

Each of these ways help me grow my business in a way that feels truly authentic to me, and of value to my audience.

When you find your way to grow a business that feels authentic to you, and you have a unique way of presenting that business, growth becomes less of a factory line strategy, and more of a joyful, satisfying process.

Step out of the noise. Find your unique approach and your unique way to go about building your business. When you do you’ll quickly move to greater success.
